Early failure is almost always soft subgrade or water. Both are dirt problems, and both are cheaper to fix before paving.

Base gets finished to the paving crew’s schedule and handed off ready, so nobody is standing around.
The machine
Sized for residential access
This work is done with our Kubota U55-5 compact excavator: 6 ft 5 in wide on rubber tracks, 11 ft 11 in dig depth and 19 ft 7 in of reach. It fits most driveways and side yards a bigger machine can’t, and it’s easier on the ground getting there.

Yes, that’s the normal way it goes. We build the subgrade and base to what they need and hand it off ready to pave.
What causes paving to fail early around here?
Soft subgrade and water. Both start in the dirt under the asphalt, and both are cheaper to fix before the paving goes down.
