Driveways & Access Roads

A driveway is a small road, and it fails for the same reasons roads fail: no base, no crown, nowhere for water to go. Built properly, with the subgrade prepared, base rock placed and compacted and the surface crowned and ditched, it stays usable through the seasons.

What the work involves

  • New gravel driveway construction
  • Access roads to building sites
  • Regrading and resurfacing worn driveways
  • Base rock placement and compaction
  • Crowning and ditching so water runs off, not down the middle
  • Culverts at driveway approaches

Who this is for

  • Rural and hillside property owners
  • New builds that need access before construction traffic arrives
  • Shared driveways that have washed out or rutted

Driveways & Access Roads questions

Can you get equipment into a steep or narrow property?

Often, but it is worth checking before anyone books a day. Send a photo or a video of the way in, showing the pinch points, the grade and any gates or overhead lines, and we will tell you straight whether it works and what size machine it takes.

Why does my driveway keep washing out?

Almost always water. Either the surface is flat or dished instead of crowned, or there is nowhere for run-off to go once it gets on there. Fixing the shape and the ditching usually matters more than adding another load of rock.
